This study examined the effectiveness of personal and contextual similarities in today’s smart thermostats. To our knowledge, in the Netherlands, there are hardly (or no) reports proving if these similarities are effective in terms of changing an individual’s intention or behavior to consume more pro-environmentally. Through a survey-based experiment consisting of two surveys over a period of two months, we examined if these personal and/or contextual similarities showed main effects when it comes to intentions to conserve energy and if this results in a lower energy consumption.
